Students are chosen in the 5th grade by the Mason Public Schools to participate and become a Mason Promise Scholar and are inducted during a ceremony at the Middle School. Students and parents sign a Promise Scholarship Compact, agreeing to the requirements and responsibilities of the program. The pathway programs provides mentoring over the subsequent 6 years of middle school and high school. The scholarship guarantees 2 years at Lansing Community College upon graduation. The first 25 students were given their induction certificates on May 17, 2006. A separate, smaller non-permanent fund finances promotion and the scholars' pathway programs.
